How to compare prop firms

Drawdown type matters most

The single biggest difference between prop firms is whether they use trailing drawdown or static drawdown. With trailing drawdown, your limit rises as your account grows โ€” meaning a big winning day can permanently reduce how much buffer you have. Static drawdown stays fixed at your starting balance, so your limit never changes regardless of how well you trade.

Most failures on trailing drawdown accounts happen after a strong start: a trader runs their account up, their limit trails up, then a few losses wipe out more buffer than expected. If you're new to prop trading, a static drawdown firm is significantly more forgiving.

Profit split vs evaluation cost

A 90% profit split sounds great, but if the evaluation costs ยฃ500 and the rules are strict, you may fail multiple times before passing. A firm with an 80% split and a ยฃ100 evaluation may be more cost-effective in practice. Always calculate the break-even point: how many months of consistent trading at your target return does it take to recover the evaluation fee?

Some firms also offer free resets or retakes if you breach during the evaluation โ€” these dramatically reduce the cost of mistakes and are worth factoring in alongside the headline profit split percentage.

News trading and overnight holds

Many prop firms restrict or outright ban trading around major news events (NFP, FOMC, CPI). If your strategy relies on news momentum or you hold trades through economic releases, you must check each firm's policy carefully. Violations can result in immediate account termination even if your drawdown limits are intact.

Similarly, some firms do not allow overnight or weekend holds. Swing traders and position traders should filter firms specifically on these criteria โ€” there are firms that accommodate longer holding periods, but they are fewer and often have stricter drawdown rules in exchange.

Consistency rules can catch you off guard

A growing number of prop firms enforce a consistency rule: no single trading day can account for more than a set percentage (typically 30โ€“50%) of your total profit target. This rule exists to prevent traders from gambling on a single position and passing on luck rather than skill.

In practice, this means you need to spread your returns across multiple trading days. If you have one exceptional day early on, you may need to reduce your targets for subsequent days to stay compliant. Use our Consistency Rule Calculator to check whether your current results would pass this check.
